Usdaw takes positive steps to promote equal treatment and tackle discrimination both at work and across wider society. The Union has equality forums in each region made up of women members, Black Minority Ethnic members, LGBT+ (lesbian, gay bisexual, transgender and non-binary member) and disabled members.
Members can volunteer to support the work of their Regional Equality Forum by contacting their local office. Usdaw also runs a national get-together for reps and members who identify as LGBT+. This is held over one weekend in the summer and it is one of the ways in which the Union aims to increase the participation of LGBT+ members in the Union’s structures, conferences and events.
While discrimination is unlawful it can be very difficult to prove. However, Usdaw works tirelessly to support members and reps both to promote equality and end discrimination in all its forms. Legislation does exist to protect individuals from discrimination and Usdaw’s reps, officials and Legal Department can be called upon to support members.
More and more LGBT+ members are getting involved in Usdaw.
