Usdaw’s ‘Check Out Learning’ wins TUC award for best campaign

06 July 2009

Usdaw picked up the TUC award for Best Campaign – for the fourth time in six years. According to the judges, the Union’s Check Out Learning campaign ‘gets everything right’.

The Union had a successful night, also coming second for its Arena magazine and its Legal Plus reps pack.

Usdaw, which is also known as ‘The Campaigning Union’ scooped the top prize for its Check Out Learning campaign, which brings adult education directly to the workplaces of thousands of retail staff.

Judges couldn’t say enough good things about the campaign:

“Check Out Learning… is a great name for a campaign that gets everything right. The objectives are clear and the outcomes will have significant long-term benefits for the union, developing both the union and the individual and collective skills of its members.

“Unions are at their best when they show members that they are not just ordinary people, but extraordinary people, and this campaign does that in spades.”

On Arena magazine they commented:

“What makes Arena really stand out is the unashamed emphasis on the benefits and positive impacts of union memberships, with great use of members’ real life stories. (It is) a magazine that makes you want to join the union.”

And on the Legal Plus reps pack they said:

“This positive pack offers great support to union reps and members on injury claims and really promotes the benefits of union membership.”

John Hannett commented:

“Winning the Best Campaign award for the fourth time in six years further enhances our profile and underlines Usdaw’s reputation within the trade union and Labour movement as ‘The Campaigning Union’.

“Well done to the campaign team and all the reps for their hard work on the Check Out Learning campaign. A lot of effort has gone into making this a success and giving members new skills, qualifications, access to new career opportunities and increased confidence.

“Congratulations as well to all the other hard working Usdaw staff that help ensure we produce top quality campaigns and publications for our members year after year.”

Due to the success of Check Out Learning; in 2008:

  • 256 members registered interest in becoming an Usdaw rep
  • 442 new members were recruited
  • 333 members returned to learning
  • A further 2395 members expressed an interest in learning and courses are still being arranged.
