Update on the Tesco store closures from Usdaw

Date: 03 February 2015 Last week Tesco identified the 43 stores that they intend to close, which leaves over 2,000 jobs at risk.
Pauline Foulkes - Usdaw National Officer says: "Our members were shocked to hear that their shop had been selected by the company for closure. Usdaw officials were in the stores soon after the announcements were made, ready to support members, provide initial advice and reassurance that the union would do whatever possible to challenge the closure decision. Each store is now entering into a full and meaningful consultation period and local Usdaw officials are leading and supporting reps through that process.

“Our priority is to maximise employment within Tesco, where necessary to seek redeployment opportunities and to keep job losses to a minimum. Where redundancy is unavoidable, Usdaw’s Union Learning Reps have been asked to support members through the joint lifelong learning initiative with Tesco.

"Our members have been heartened by the support they've received from the communities they serve. We contacted all Labour MPs and candidates in the areas affected by store closures, who in turn have offered support for our members, which we are grateful for.

“Usdaw will continue support, advise and represent our members throughout this difficult period of uncertainty.”
