Usdaw's survey of Lidl staff shows they need the union to get a fairer deal at work

Date: 16 December 2016 Usdaw is the trade union for Lidl staff and today we are stepping up the campaign for recognition and give the staff a strong voice at work. We are focussing on Lidl stores across the North West, with an ad van and activists talking to staff and shoppers. Usdaw campaigners are also outside M&S, Aldi and Lidl stores in every region across the country.
Paddy Lillis - Usdaw Deputy General Secretary says: “An Usdaw survey of Lidl staff shows that they are unhappy about their treatment at work and morale in store can be pretty low. The comments and real experiences of Lidl workers are the basis of our campaign today.

“The company now needs to sit down with Usdaw, the independent trade union representing their staff, so we can work to overcome the significant issues raised in the survey. Many Lidl workers are joining Usdaw and we urge others to sign up to the union, so that Usdaw can help get them a better deal and a strong voice at work for when things are going wrong. "

Advertising van slogans that Usdaw are using today are direct quotes from Lidl staff, taken from the union’s survey, and highlight the #LidlSurprises staff can face:

“Harassment is a big problem in the store, even though the company has an anti-harassment policy."

“When issues are raised nothing gets done and we don’t have a health and safety officer on site."

“I was told Lidl don’t recognise trade unions and I’d be sacked if I joined one."

“Lidl are a very hard employer to work for who use subtle bullying to achieve their goals.”

“The rota always changes without consent and we get sent home early when they want to save on hours.”

“You never finish your shift on time, sometimes it’s one or two hours later."
