Hate crime continues to rise in England & Wales

New statistics released by the police in England and Wales reveal that hate crimes are continuing to rise, increasing by another 10% in the last year.

This continues the upward trend in recent years with the number of hate crimes recorded by the police more than doubling since 2012/13.

The overwhelming majority of hate crimes are race hate crimes. Race hate crimes account for over three quarters of all offences reported. Last year race hate crimes rose by almost 8 thousand (compared to the year before) bringing the total number of offences to just under 79,000 for the period 2018/19.

Reported homophobic hate crimes increased by almost 3,000 reaching 14,491 in 2018/19, reported disability hate crimes rose by just over 1,000 reaching 8,256 and transgender hate crimes rose by 630 reaching 2,333.

More than 1 in 10 hate crimes involve more than one ‘motivating factor’ (for example race and disability or sexual orientation). The two most common factors in the majority of these offences were race and religious belief. Almost half of all religious hate crimes were targeted against Muslim people. The second most commonly targeted group were Jewish people, who were targeted in 18% of religious hate crimes.
