"End child poverty - make work pay" Usdaw's call to the Scottish Labour Party Conference

Date: 09 March 2018 The Scottish Labour Party Conference, meeting in Dundee, has today backed Usdaw’s call for an end to child poverty by making work pay.
Delegates at the conference have mandated the Scottish Labour Party to:
  • Make ending child poverty a priority.
  • Unfreeze and increase Child Benefit.
  • Ensure every child has access to good quality food before and during the school day.
  • Make work pay through the use of public procurement to promote good quality, well paid employment.
  • Work with the UK Labour Party to introduce a statutory real living wage.
  • Tackle insecure employment through the use of zero and short-hour contracts by giving every worker the right to a contract reflecting their normal working hours.

John Hannett – Usdaw General Secretary says: “Figures published by the End Child Poverty Coalition that show that there has been a significant increase in child poverty with areas of central Glasgow having amongst the highest levels across the whole UK. More than a quarter of Scottish children now live in poverty. This increase in child poverty is unacceptable so we need real and meaningful action.

“The financial squeeze on low income households, with benefit freezes, rising prices and stagnating incomes has a direct link to this increase in child poverty. Tens of thousands of Scottish children living in poverty are in households with at least one person in work.

“We cannot rest while poverty is increasing. Making child poverty a thing of the past must be a priority for the Labour Party.”
