New Year message from Paddy Lillis - Usdaw General Secretary

Date: 01 January 2022 Shopworkers’ trade union leader Paddy Lillis has sent out New Year wishes and committed Usdaw to campaigning for a new deal on pay, secure workplaces and measures to help keep members safe at work.
Paddy Lillis – Usdaw General Secretary says: “As we head into 2022 I hope that you and your loved ones are keeping safe and well after what has been another very difficult year. The coronavirus pandemic continues to present significant challenges for all, especially in light of rising infections and the more transmissible Omicron variant.

“Workplace safety remains a key priority for Usdaw, whether that is the risk of contracting the virus or the increased threats, abuse and violence our members face. We continue to urge the public to respect workers, follow Covid safety rules and get jabbed to protect us all.

“With rising living costs, we need improved pay and conditions. Usdaw is campaigning for a new deal for workers based on at least £10 per hour immediately and secure contracts. We also need better sick pay so that workers can afford to isolate, to help limit Covid infections. If ‘build back better’ means anything, it will be centred on fairness at work.

“The possibility of further restrictions in the New Year shows us that significant hurdles remain in place. However, as we look forward, the booster vaccine rollout gives us hope that we can once again get infection rates under control and return to some form of normality in the not too distant future.

“Usdaw will continue to campaign for a new deal on pay, secure workplaces and measures to help keep our members safe. Happy New Year! Let’s hope 2022 is much better.”
