Usdaw mourns the passing of a former general secretary Lord Davies of Coity RIP 04 March 2019 Garfield Davies joined Usdaw’s staff as an Area Organiser in 1969. He was appointed a National Officer in 1978 and elected General Secretary in 1985 taking up his position the following January. Garfield was awarded the CBE in 1996 for services to industrial relations and later made a life peer entering the House of Lords in 1997 as Lord Davies of Coity. Save our Shops! Elis staff are left stunned by the news that the Kirkcaldy site will close in April with a loss of 86 jobs 20 February 2019 Following a consultation period laundry company Elis have confirmed that they will be closing their Kirkcaldy site in April. Despite huge efforts to avoid the outcome the company have decided to shut the facility and move all operations to their site in Glasgow. Sainsbury’s and Asda merger in doubt – Usdaw calls on the CMA to listen to workers’ concerns over jobs 20 February 2019 The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has today released its provisional findings into the proposed Sainsbury’s and Asda merger. The CMA has so far concluded that on the balance of probabilities, a merger would result in a substantial lessening of competition.
