Alarming 37% increase in shoplifting across England and Wales – Usdaw reports a doubling of violence against shopworkers 25 April 2024 Retail trade union Usdaw is deeply concerned by today’s police recorded crime statistics for England and Wales showing that in 2023 there was a 37% increase in shoplifting. This continues the trend of persistent quarterly increases since the pandemic and has now risen to the highest level in 20 years. Supreme Court to hear the Usdaw challenge to Tesco on their use of ‘fire and rehire’ to undermine ‘retained pay’ 18 April 2024 Retail trade union Usdaw and leading law firm Thompsons are challenging supermarket giant Tesco on their use of ‘fire and rehire’ in the Supreme Court. The case will be heard on Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 April 2024. This is the final stage of a long running legal battle. A similar case involving workers at the Livingston site has been stayed in the Scottish courts until proceedings have concluded in England. Sainsbury’s Local store on Watergate in Chester set to close – Usdaw is supporting members through the process 18 April 2024 Retail trade union Usdaw has been briefed by the supermarket giant Sainsbury’s of their intention to close the ‘Local’ convenience store on Watergate Street in Chester 14 September 2024. This will impact 14 staff, with most at risk of redundancy. Government urged by Usdaw not to dilute a protection of shopworkers law 17 April 2024 Retail trade union Usdaw has today given evidence to the House of Commons Home Affairs Select Committee, as part of their investigation into violence and abuse towards retail workers. The union took the opportunity to urge Ministers not to dilute protections for retail workers when they introduce a promised standalone offence for assaulting and abusing shopworkers.
