Widespread shop closures on Boxing Day welcomed by Usdaw to give staff a well-earned two day break over Christmas

Shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw has welcomed that many retail companies are keeping their doors closed on Boxing Day this year. The union’s ‘Christmas is not working’ campaign had called for the longest possible break for staff over Christmas to give them a well-deserved breather.

Usdaw members overwhelmingly accept a much improved pay offer in nine Tesco distribution centres

Two ballots of over 5,000 Usdaw members closed today, with nearly 90% accepting the much improved pay offer from Tesco. Usdaw recommended support for the new deal of 5.5% backdated to July and a further 0.5% from the end of February next year.

Welsh shops, alongside the existing requirement to wear face coverings. The union is calling on retailers to promote face coverings, hand hygiene and social distancing in their stores and urging shoppers to follow the rules.

The Government proposed the amendment after years of opposition to Usdaw’s campaign for a new law to protect shopworkers.
