Retail trade union Usdaw has expressed disappointment because, on their keynote speeches to the Conservative conference, neither the Justice Secretary or Home Secretary said a single word about the epidemic of retail crime sweeping our shops and high streets. This despite Usdaw and 88 retailers coming together at the weekend and calling for urgent government action.

Retail trade union Usdaw has condemned the Crime and Policing Minister for his reported comments to a Conservative conference fringe meeting where it is reported that he called on the public to make citizen’s arrests in supermarkets if they saw shoplifters. The union has branded this ‘DIY policing’ as dangerous and irresponsible.

Chancellor’s minimum wage announcement won’t be enough to help workers cope with the cost of living crisis says Usdaw

Retail trade union Usdaw has called on the Chancellor to go further than today’s announcement to the Conservative conference of a minimum wage above £11 per hour from next April. Usdaw is calling for the minimum wage to become a real living wage, alongside a new deal for workers that tackles insecure employment, something Labour has already committed to deliver in the first 100 days of coming into Government.

Retail trade union Usdaw has joined 88 retail leaders and co-signed a letter to Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, asking for action to support shopworkers who continue to face unacceptable levels of violence and abuse, amid a rise in shop theft which in many cases is the root cause of incidents.

Tesco rolls out new screens to protect staff – Usdaw backs the move and calls for a protection of workers law

Retail trade union Usdaw has welcomed a move by Tesco to introduce new protective screens at hundreds of Express stores and petrol station kiosks in a further bid to protect its colleagues from assault. The supermarket, which has already rolled out body-worn cameras, is making the move amid a rising tide of retail crime.

Retail trade union Usdaw has again called on the Government to intervene further in tackling the cost of living crisis, which is severely impacting low-paid workers. On Sunday 1 October the cap on the unit price of gas and electricity reduces by £124, but bills remain extremely high.
