As people get older, some may find they spend more time on their own. This can sometimes feel lonely, boring or make people miss friends and family.
Age UK offer a telephone friendship service for older people which is free to use and means they can enjoy chatting with someone over the phone.
As a volunteer, you will befriend someone who's 60 or over. It's a safe and easy way to get to know someone new.
It involves a weekly call of 30-minutes or so, that should be made on the same day and time each week. You can make the call from wherever suits you - including the comfort of your own home.
For the person you call, your call could be something they really look forward to. For you, it’s an enjoyable way to get to know someone new and have a natter while making a real difference to someone’s life.
To find out more or to volunteer, see the Age UK website www.ageuk.org.uk/get-involved/volunteer/telephone-friend/
Or, if you are aged 60 or over and would like to be the one receiving the calls, you can sign up with Age UK on 0800 434 6105 or on the website here.
